Next Saturday, March 5th, Railroad Earth will take the stage at NYC’s Playstation Theater in the heart of Times Square (tickets are available here). The roots and Americana-based “newgrass” jam band is made up of six highly talented musicians that can flat out write beautiful songs and take them to great heights, with their ability to stretch them out with some serious jamming. While the group doesn’t like to be labeled in one style or another, their songs are steeped heavily in the bluegrass, rock n’ roll, and celtic traditions.Whether it is Todd Sheaffer‘s skillful song craftsmanship, Tim Carbone‘s ethereal violin, the sound of John Skehan‘s alluring mandolin playing, Andy Goessling literally playing one of nine instruments, or the rhythm section of Carey Harmon on drums and Andrew Altman on upright/electric bass holding it down, one thing is for certain: when all of the pieces come together it makes for a transcendental experience. Railroad Earth’s music simply takes you on a enchanted journey of epic proportions. With five studio albums under their belts, along with the extremely popular live album Elko, Railroad Earth was also brought in to record last year’s highly-acclaimed album Ashes & Dust by Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, which was followed by a tour in support of the record. In other words, this isn’t a show that you want to miss.Warren Haynes and Railroad Earth Debut ‘Ashes & Dust’ At Intimate Town Hall PerformanceJoining Railroad Earth for the NYC show will be Scranton-based bluegrass outfit Cabinet. The group has been gaining a lot of recognition over the last couple of years, touring all over the country while releasing their third studio album Celebration in early 2015. Make sure to get to the show for Cabinet’s opening set, as there is sure to be plenty of boot-stomping and drinking of barley-laced ales during their set (well, really the entire night). Adobe’s Creative Cloud has suffered a number of bugs and stability problems with each update. One bug, though, could get expensive.News broke earlier this month of a class action lawsuit filed against Adobe for what may well be the bug of all bugs. This one caused the deletion of hundreds of thousands of videos, projects, and photos from users’ drives when a bug in the Clean Cache code allowed for outright deletion of all files on which the Media Cache folder was stored.Dave Cooper was one of the victims, losing hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of footage from across the world shot for various high-profile clients.Fed up after days of attempted recovery of his work, he decided a legal course of action was his only option. So what happened? The “Clean Cache” BugImage via Grenar. While editing, most NLEs create some form of cached copies of footage and assets in order to speed up performance. When the project is ready for archival, users can clear the cache to save space. In Premiere, the Clean Cache button is only supposed to affect the Media Cache folder — and nothing else; however, the bug caused the clear cache function to move into the root directories of the drive on which it was located.Adobe patched the bug within a week after multiple users experienced data loss from multiple sources. Patch 11.1.1 fixed the bug — and gave us the single greatest patch note in Premiere’s history:The update changes the behavior of the media cache deletion. With 11.1.1, only files that are within the Media Cache folder’s subdirectories will be deleted. Files that sit next to it will no longer be affected. However, we still strongly recommend keeping the Media Cache folder separate from your original media.Well done, Adobe. Unfortunately for Dave Cooper, the patch for the Premiere bug didn’t come quick enough. The single archival drive of his work was wiped — irrevocably. The LawsuitFiled on November 7th, 2018, the class action lawsuit filed by Cooper’s attorneys is seeking damages of $250,000 for his lost data. The 250 grand is to compensate Cooper for the footage he shot while working in countries as far-flung as Brazil, India, Egypt, and Senegal for clients like PBS, the World Resources Institute, and USAID.In addition to Cooper’s work as a videographer, he also licensed these clips out multiple times per year — that means revenue lost for good after the loss of all his source archive. The damages also seek to cover this lost income potential.Because this is a class action lawsuit, all users who experienced this bug would be entitled to some form of compensation, should the Judge rule in Cooper’s favor. Expect litigation to take a while though. It Could Happen to YouFrom Dave Cooper to Pixar, everyone is vulnerable to data loss. There are so many ways your valuable work could be completely lost. It is essential that every professional working in the industry understands how devastating the effects of data loss can truly be.Dave Cooper’s biggest mistake was relying on a single drive for the archival of his livelihood. Sure, how could he expect a bug so stupid as the one that crippled him to destroy the drive? But relying on a single backup of any type of data is a ticking time bomb.Always back up your work on multiple hard drives. Only plug one of your backups in at any given time — the others should be somewhere safe. Verify that there is full redundancy between each drive using MD5 bit-for-bit comparison, or some other similar technique. No matter the cause, every filmmaker will experience some form of data loss over the course of their career, so always be prepared for worst-case scenarios. Adobe bungled big time, and in my opinion, everyone affected by this insanely sloppy and damaging bug should receive compensation for their lost work. One of the attorneys on the case put it well in an interview with Vice reporter Matthew Gault:As a freelance visual artist, all you are and all you have is your work. If you don’t have your work then you might as well not be a visual artist.Take that to heart, and protect your work.Cover image via igorstevanovic.Looking for more information on the filmmaking industry? Ways to keep tanning at bay and tackle stretch marks.Shirin emailed to say that even though she used a sunscreen while swimming last year, she acquired a bad tan. She wants to know what she can do to prevent it this season.Exposure to the sun is the leading cause of wrinkled, rough and blotchy skin. Sunscreens are your best bet when it comes to protecting yourself from photo damage. When it comes to outdoor activities like swimming, it’s not just enough to use a sunscreen, it’s important to choose well and get the application right. Opt for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher and choose one that comes powered with UVA and UVB blockers. Also, make sure you apply the sunscreen at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. Use enough sunscreen for the face and neck, ideally, an amount equivalent to the size of a 50 paise coin. Also, you need to remember that no sunscreen is completely sweat proof or waterproof. This apart, always remember to apply a sunscreen, not just before but immediately after a swim.Suruchi emailed to say that she is left with stretch marks on her upper arms after losing weight. She wants to know if otc creams are effective cures.Stretch marks or striae are caused by sudden stretching of the connective tissue under intact skin and are generally associated with rapid growth or weight gain. Although stretch marks tend to diminish over a period of time, they never disappear completely. OTC creams containing Vitamin E, collagen hydrolase and retinoids help lighten stretch marks to a degree. However, now there are also a number of cosmetic treatments available for it. These include microdermabrasion and chemical peels like retinoid peels that help stretch marks merge better with normal skin. Radiofrequency has also been found to be quite effective. Fractional laser resurfacing which creates microscopic wounds and helps produce new collagen and epithelium is one of the newer treatments available. However, it is important you consult a qualified dermatologist who will guide you about your best treatment option.advertisementDr Rekha Sheth is a leading cosmetic dermatologist.
