‘Struggling Man United need FA Cup win MORE than West Ham’, claims Rio Ferdinand

first_imgRio Ferdinand has told talkSPORT Manchester United have more riding on Wednesday’s FA Cup replay than West Ham, and NEED to win to save their season. The Hammers will host their final FA Cup clash at Upton Park on Wednesday night, where, after the previous 1-1 draw, the teams will do battle again for a place in the Wembley semi-finals – you can listen to the game LIVE on talkSPORT.Under-pressure manager Louis van Gaal has admitted the FA Cup is United’s last chance for redemption after what has been a disappointing campaign.Having played for both teams, Ferdinand’s allegiance is split, but with West Ham unbeaten in their last ten games the former defender insists the pressure will all be on the Red Devils.“There is a lot riding on the game, but I think Man United need this [the win] more than West Ham,” the ex-England centre-back told talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams.“I’ve come here with Man United in the past, and it’s always been about Man United, but this time West Ham are in as good, if not better, a position.“[United] need to win for Louis van Gaal, and also for the club. The club doesn’t seem to be in a great place at the moment.“It’s a hard question for me, who do I want to win this game, and I don’t want Man United to win, I just think they need it more than West Ham.“It will definitely be a special night, and this season [the last at the Boleyn Ground] it’s meant a lot more to West Ham than it ever has before.”West Ham have enjoyed one of their best campaigns in recent years, with manager Slaven Bilic steering the club into a new era with a fresh, new-look squad and a new stadium move on the way.And Ferdinand hopes the Hammers will learn from the past and keep their roster of stars together to push the club forward. He added: “When I was here [at West Ham] we had the potential to do really well, but the squad was never kept together. You’d like to think, and I hope, this team will be kept together and would grow together.“Speaking to Slaven, he’s really thinking along those lines. Everything is positive at the moment, the shape of the club, in terms of their position in the league and the new stadium coming, plus they’re still in the FA Cup.“It’s all pointing in the right direction.”Tune into talkSPORT from 19:00 on Wednesday for LIVE commentary of West Ham v Man United in the FA Cuplast_img read more

“We have no idea why these galaxies grew so large so soon”

first_imgFive full-sized galaxies have been detected at the edge of the visible universe, reported Science Now.  This continues a trend over the last few years where astronomers have been detecting old objects at young ages (e.g., 07/25/2007, 09/24/2006, 08/18/2006, 03/31/2006).   “The galaxies, which are forming stars very rapidly, are big for their age, meaning that astronomers might have to rethink current ideas about galaxy formation.”    Rethinking looms big as a theme in the article.  The first stars were supposed to coalesce slowly into the first galaxies, but “this process was supposed to take billions of years.”  A team using data from Hubble, Spitzer and Keck telescopes confirmed these are Milky Way sized galaxies, not small members of a cluster.  “We have no idea why these galaxies grew so large so soon,” remarked Giovanni Fazio of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.  “I think we still have a lot new to learn about what’s happening in the early universe,”This is not a surprise to creationists.  It is a surprise to big-bang secular cosmologists.  We hope the astronomers will rethink current ideas, but for significant progress, they will have to think outside the bang.(Visited 17 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Yahoo Reports Its Data Request Numbers

first_imgYahoo has joined the ranks of Internet technology companies demonstrating their commitment to openness – and trying to rebuild trust with their users – with its own revelation of data requests received from law enforcement agencies.Yahoo announced the numbers in a Tumblr blog from CEO Marissa Mayer and General Counsel Ron Bell, citing figures from December 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013.During that time period, we received between 12,000 and 13,000 requests, inclusive of criminal, Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), and other requests. The most common of these requests concerned fraud, homicides, kidnappings, and other criminal investigations. The FISA requests are presumably tied to the leaked program known only as PRISM, alleged to be the NSA’s secret access to major Internet companies’ data stores in the intelligence agency’s hunt for terrorists.See also PRISM Leaker Goes Public To Defend ClaimsSince information on PRISM was leaked by Booz Allen technician Edward Snowden earlier this month, the companies implicated in the leaked material have made a point to disclose what they can about requests for information, while asking to go farther and be allowed to separate the FISA request figures from the other law enforcement requests. The implication is that FISA requests are much fewer in number than standard law enforcement requests, which would thus let companies like Microsoft, Facebook, Google and Yahoo release some of the intense scrutiny they have been under since Prism was first detailed. But, until they are permitted to make such distinctions, it seems that these public transparency reports will have to do.
