The Minister of State with Responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe, has scrambled Air Corps helicopters and army personnel to the scene of a serious gorse fire in West Donegal. The huge fire, in the Annagry and Loughanure areas, is out of control and in danger of coming into contact with homes. At least eight sections of Donegal Fire Service have been battling the blaze for the past five hours. They have been supported on the ground by scores of local volunteers who are risking their lives to beat out the flames.Local TD and Leas Cheann Comhairle Pat the Cope Gallagher called on the Minister for Defence to mobile the Aer Corps and soldiers in a bid to halt the spread of the fires. He has criticised how long it has taken the Minister to make a decision on the matter.“The Minister has just called me to confirm the approval has been given for a helicopter to travel to Annagry and that army personnel are also being sent to assist Donegal “Myself and Donegal County Council requested the Minister to send up the Aer Corps four hours ago and they have only mobilised them a short time ago and I am very disappointed that it took so long.“We cannot delay this any longer as these fires are out of control. We must stop this fire as it spreads towards homes,” he said. There is still no indication as to how the latest fires started.Donegal County Council also made a decision to employ a private company to bring in a helicopter to spread water over the flames. The eater for the choppers is to be taken from nearby lakes and then spread over the most dangerous areas. Among those battling the blaze is local county councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig.“It is very intense. As soon as the fire service get it under control the wind whips up the flames again.“The community response has been amazing but we are still in the middle of trying to bring this under control,” he said.It comes just days after two homes were destroyed two homes in Annagry. Tjaronn Chery’s brilliant left-footed strike – his third goal in his last five matches – put QPR ahead.In-form keeper Alex Smithies played a big part in Rangers’ 24th-minute opener at Loftus Road, where the home side have grown in confidence since taking the lead.Smithies threw the ball to James Perch near the halfway line and the full-back galloped down the left and delivered a perfect cross to Chery, who guided the ball into the net with a sublime volley.Earlier, Sebastian Polter, back in the QPR starting line-up along with Clint Hill, Matt Phillips, Junior Hoilett and Alejandro Faurlin, went close with a long-range shot that went just wide. And four minutes after his goal, Chery tried his luck with another left-footed effort that that flashed narrowly wide too.Rangers went close again seven minutes before the break, when Phillips was just unable to connect with Hoilett’s left-wing cross.QPR: Smithies, Onuoha, Angella, Hill, Perch, Faurlin Henry, Phillips, Chery, Hoilett, Polter.Subs: Ingram, Konchesky, Tozser, Petrasso, El Khayati, Mackie, Washington.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebook
Congress of South African Trade Unions secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi roused the crowd with a passionate speech on the ills of the current education system. MediaClubSouthAfrica.com reporter – get free high-resolution photos and professional feature articles from Brand South Africa’s media service. The accord further states that businesses must adopt schools that are performing poorly and subsequently implement whole school development programmes. Brand South Africa’s director of stakeholder relations, Iggy Sathakge, said the launch came ahead of a national roll-out of the Adopt-a-School campaign, with the aim of delivering quality education to all underdeveloped schools. On 13 July, an accord was signed by businesses, labour and the government as a pledge to ensure that every South African child was in a classroom and every teacher was teaching. Vavi emphasised the lack of progress made in provinces like the Eastern Cape and said the crisis manifested profoundly in this province because the Department of Education was dysfunctional. He added that a website would launch within the next month that would monitor the role businesses were playing in their chosen schools. He added that it was not just up to teachers to ensure children were educated but that all members of communities, including churches, families and police, should be accountable as well. “If a business adopts a school, they may conduct an analysis of what a school requires and then provide what is needed,” said Sathakge. Initial focus on three provinces According to the recently signed accord, organised labour, business and community organisations must aim to adopt between 100 and 200 schools by the end of 2011. Depending on this year’s success, the programme will be expanded to target between 500 and 1 000 schools in 2012. “This campaign will demand accountability. Those who have mismanaged the education system must be dismissed,” he said to a cheering crowd. Key points of the accord The accord also states that the parties involved in the Adopt-a-School campaign will agree to work together to change the mindset of teachers, pupils and parents to rebuild the part of the education system that is dysfunctional. As a means to monitor progress, Sathakge said that partners would report regularly on the roles each business had played. 3 October 2011 The launch took place in Butterworth as the town was recognised as a hotspot for dysfunctional schools. Sathakge said the campaign’s initial roll-out would take place in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Sathakge said the majority of citizens lacked a strong educational foundation, which was supposed to have been acquired at primary school level. As a result, when they got to university, they tended to drop out. More than four hundred community members braved the rainy weather to gather at the Caley Sports Ground in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape for the national launch of the Accord on Basic Education and Partnerships with Schools campaign on Sunday. A number of companies have already committed themselves to the campaign, including banking group Absa, the Industrial Development Corporation and food manufacturer Nestle, which is providing bursaries to pupils. It concludes by saying that the campaign aims to produce fully functional schools with the so-called Triple T foundations of a good institute. These include effective leadership and management; teachers arriving in class on time and teaching for the full period; and making teaching materials available. He said that communities must adopt a zero tolerance approach towards lazy teachers and those who used female pupils as sexual objects. “The challenge is greater in these three provinces, and special attention will be given to schools in these areas,” he said, noting that the matric pass rate had been dropping in these regions in recent years. He added that there would be no specific timeline for the campaign and that it would operate for as long as necessary to reach the objective of providing quality education. Demanding accountability Run by the Department of Basic Education, the National Economic Development and Labour Council, and Brand South Africa, the campaign encourages businesses to “adopt” schools and donate educational facilities to them. He also said that, countrywide, most children from poor backgrounds were stuck in dysfunctional schools, adding that: “60% of those schools do not have laboratories and 60% of pupils are pushed out of the education system before they reach grade 12.” “The premise of the campaign is to build requisite skills at primary level education,” said Sathakge, after acknowledging that the nation’s skills level was low and at risk of staying that way.
The families of people killed in a train accident during a Dasara celebration in Amritsar in 2018 staged a protest outside Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s residence in Amritsar demanding government jobs. About 60 people were mowed down and 72 injured by a train that hurtled through the crowd which had spilled onto railway tracks while watching a Ravana effigy burn. Mr. Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, was the chief guest at the event held on October 19, 2018.The protesters alleged that the Sidhus had failed to honour their promise of ensuring a government job for a family member of each victim. They claimed that Mr. Sidhu had promised to adopt the families that had lost their earning member and to bear their monthly kitchen expenses. Besides, they claimed, he had promised free education for the next of kin of all victims. The protesters, residents of Mr. Sidhu’s Amritsar East constituency, demanded to know the outcome of a magisterial inquiry. They also demanded that responsibility be fixed for it and the guilty be punished.Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had ordered the inquiry into the incident. A 300-page report was submitted to the Punjab Home Secretary in November 2018.The 30 families ended the demonstration after police officials informed them that the Congress leader and his wife were away.
